Trade Rumor - Baseball Wiretap
Will Phils Deal For A Big Arm?
The Phillies are looking to add an arm to their pitching rotation and a host of names - including Erik Bedard, Roy Oswalt, C.C. Sabathia and Greg Maddux - have been mentioned in rumors, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Outfielder Shane Victorino is expected to be a cornerstone of any deal the team swings for a pitcher.
"I know I could be a chip," Victorino said. "My name has come up ever since I had that good year in triple A [in 2005], and I understand this year it might be different because the farm system is not the deepest."
Unfortunately for the Phillies, a host of teams are also looking to add a star pitcher.
"We have to balance going for it now versus the future," assistant general manager Mike Arbuckle said. "We have to keep in mind that this is not a club that is all-or-nothing this year. We have to be careful about absolutely wiping out the best young players in the system to do it now. That is not to say we don't want to win now and won't move good players if we feel the deal is right. It's just something we're looking at carefully."
Five Teams Looking At Colorado's Fuentes?
A host of teams are interested in Rockies reliever Brian Fuentes as the All-Star break approaches, according to The New York Post.
The Mets, Yankees, Phillies, Red Sox, and Athletics are all interested in the services of Fuentes, who has a 2.05 ERA with 13 saves this season.
The Yankees are in dire need of a left arm in the bullpen, but Philadelphia looks like the front-runner as they have reported offered 22-year-old righty Fabio Castro.
Cubs Looking At Sabathia And Harden?
With Carlos Zambrano on the shelf momentarily and the Cubs looking like legitimate playoff contenders, they appear ready to make a run at either C.C. Sabathia or Rich Harden, according to The Chicago Tribune.
Buster Olney of ESPN has ranked the Cubs second to the Brewers in the race for Sabathia. The Indians are rumored to be shopping the left-hander because they don't appear primed to contend in the American League.
Phillies Scouting Burnett And Sheets?
Phillies Assistant General Manager Charley Kerfeld has been in Milwaukee this week, which has allowed him to scout both Ben Sheets and Toronto's A.J. Burnett, according to The Philadelphia Daily News.
Both the Brewers and Blue Jays are expected to be sellers around this season's MLB trade deadline.
Reds Willing To Deal Harang And Phillips?
Cincinnati is reportedly willing to listen to trade offers for starter Aaron Harang and hitter Brandon Phillips, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
Reds GM Walt Jocketty would likely be willing to deal the pair if the team can acquire young prospects and save millions of dollars.
In a radio appearance recently, Jocketty listed Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto, and Edwin Encarnacion as "untouchable".
Market Expanding For C.C. Sabathia?
Assuming Cleveland is eventually going to trade pitcher C.C. Sabathia, the market is appearing to grow for the Cy Young winner, according to The Plain Dealer.
A handful of contenders saw pieces of their rotation land on the disabled list, with Chien-Ming Wang (New York), Bartolo Colon (Boston), Carlos Zambrano (Chicago), and Brady Penny (Los Angeles) all hurting.
The Dodgers, whom the Indians will play this weekend, are also without Hiroki Kuroda.
Are Cubs Still Targeting Coco Crisp?
The Chicago Cubs are reportedly still looking at Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp, according to The Boston Herald.
The Cubs had a talent scout at both of Boston's last two stops on their recent road trip.
However, the Sox are unlikely to deal Crisp in the immediate future with Manny Ramirez still suffering from hamstring issues.
Rockies Shopping Torrealba?
The Colorado Rockies could be looking to trade catcher Yorvit Torrealba as Manager Clint Hurdle looks to maximize the team's offensive production, according to The Denver Post.
Torrealba has started just three of the past 13 games and is hitting just .234 compared to Chris Iannetta's batting average of .277.
The Rockies signed Torrealba to a two-year, $7.25 million contract last winter to be their starter.
Yankees Not Likely To Trade For Sabathia
Despite the serious injury suffered by starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang, the Yankees are not likely to trade for Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia, according to a report in Newsday.
"Although we don't comment on individual players, it's prudent for us to do due diligence to be buyers or sellers," Indians' General Manager Mark Shapiro said Monday, "so that if an opportunity presents itself, we can execute an intelligent trade."
However, league executives don't expect New York to make a major play for the left-handed Cy Young winner.
"I'd be very surprised if that happened," said one official from a major-league team who follows the Yankees closely. "Cash has been very conservative the past few years."
Burnett OK With Talk Of Trade To Cubs
Blue Jays' pitcher A.J. Burnett is fine with rumors of a trade to the Cubs, according to The Globe And Mail.
As the trade deadline inches closer, Burnett recently admitted that he'd be fine with a deal to the contending Chicago Cubs.
Burnett was quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times on Sunday as saying, "As of right now, I'm a Blue Jay, and I'm going to pitch to the best of my ability as long as I'm part of this club. But if something were to happen and I'd have the opportunity to go to a place where baseball is breakfast, lunch, and dinner, that would be awesome. Right now my focus is with this club, but if something like that were to happen, I'd accept it with open arms."
Burnett is 6-6 with a 4.90 ERA in fourteen starts this season.
